From Parry Sound, Ontario, Denise “Mama D” returns to camp for her 17th summer. Denise began her time at Manitou in 1998 and is excited to return to the director team again this summer. She manages our scheduling system ensuring parent and camper requests are fulfilled. Denise also runs our 1st camper experience programs including our Day Camp Overnights and Rookie Day 1-day programs. She also conceptualized our Friday Night Fireside program years ago and manages this important part of camp including coordinating our Speaker Series. Her favourite pastime is being a mom to her 13-year old daughter, Hannah, and her 10-year old son, Carter. She is the President of the Parry Sound Stinger Basketball Club and teaches Physical Education, an Elite Athlete course, and Grade 12 Social Sciences full-time for Blyth Academy Online, while she is also a part-time professor with Canadore College. She is a fitness enthusiast, and is not only a Certified Personal Trainer but has competed on stage in several fitness competitions. Denise has coached athletes at all levels and has a passion for outdoor education. She previously worked as an Outdoor Educator for Mentor College and has travelled extensively throughout North America, Europe, and the Middle East. Denise holds a degree in Education from Nipissing University in North Bay, a degree in Social Development Studies from the University of Waterloo, and a Diploma in Recreation and Leisure Services from Centennial College. Denise was World Games captain in her first year, 1998, for Team Kenya, and has worked at Manitou as a counsellor, Unit Head, Activity Head, Administrative Director, and Activity Director. She returns for her 17th season on staff as our Operations Director.
