Testimonials 2010

Email to a new camper from Junior Boy Alex regarding what its like coming in new-

When I first started going to Manitou I was nine years old and I had no idea what to expect. I was a little scared but i can tell you honestly that the second I walked off the bus into the camp, I knew I would have a great summer. I could give you a list about why I keep on having such great summers, but I will give you my main reasons. All of the counsellors and campers are very welcoming to any new camper that walks off the bus into the camp, if a camper has a problem their counsellors are always open to help them, with a happy and caring attitude. They are nice and open about everything, and will help you with anything, if you ever have a problem or need someone to talk to, they will be there. The kids are very nice and down to earth. They will always include you and always help you out if you have a problem or an issue. Once you start to share a cabin with the campers there, they don't become a stranger at all, instantly they all become your friends. Me and my friends share the same cabin every year. Another aspect of the camp that I enjoy is that you have the option to choose your activities. You see, I am not that into big sports so I can do my activities that I love. During the first few nights of camp, your counsellor will give each camper a list. That camper will have the option to right down i think it is twelve or ten activities that they would like to do. There will be a box beside every line that you can write an activity in that will give you the option to put the name of a friend. Than the directors will look at that, and if you and your friend both put each other's name down, then you will do the activity together. For example, me and my friend Benji, wanted to do tennis together, so we both wrote each others name down and we did that activity together.

The food there is amazing, honestly I even tell my parents this, it is better than the food they make at my home. Once you go to Manitou, you live there, so everyone you know becomes your family, even the staff. Every year i see the same staff and friends, and I look forward to seeing them all year long. Manitou has a warm energy, everyone there is nice, I just feel like when I am there I am safe, and happy. The activity directors make everything you do fun. They make everything exiting and unique. If you get hime sick you will have friends and counsellors to talk to. I remember this one time that my counsellor was busy with an activity, and I was upset because i was home-sick. My friend was trying but couldn't help me, so I went to my counsellor, he told me he would be with me in ten minutes but the second I told him that I was home-sick. He got up, and went to make me feel better right away with out a seconds regret. The doctors there are very helpful, I have never been to the doctor because i was never sick, but when my friends were there, they were cured and back to normal in no time. Every morning I would be allowed to take my allergy pills and the nurses would help me and make me feel great.

You can look forward to Manitou and the amazing staff, campers, food, activities, fun, and good times that he will have there.

The very best,
Alex

Last year was my first year at Manitou, and I was kind of scared before, but as soon as i got there that all went away. The 100000000 amazing new experiences that I know you probably couldn't do anywhere else (well not where i'm from anyway) are only just the beginning of why I had the best summer of my life. It gave me the opportunity to meet so many new people and make so many life long best friends. The food was great, it gave me the opportunity to try so many new activities and learn so many new skills. I matured there, I learnt from other people and over all I had a positively UNREAL time! Manitou is the best, funnest place on earth, they say home is where the heart is, a place you love, Manitou is my home.
Megan, senior from England

The boys have been home less than five hours and they are already asking how many days until next summer. They have not stopped talking about everything including their canoe trip. After just two weeks both of them have returned home as different kids in a good way!! They are so proud of their accomplishments this summer as are we. Please thank all of the freshkid counselors for us and Activity Heads and Directors that the boys bonded with…and Mark a big thank you to you. We knew right at the beginning that Manitou was the camp for our boys but it was the meetings with us that solidified it for our children,. They felt comfortable and safe with you from the beginning. Thank you for providing a safe, loving and SUPER FUN environment for our kids
First time parent of freshkid boys

I just wanted to let you know how impressed we are with Manitou. …We were blown away…From the minute we met you and you spoke to our son you made us all feel so comfortable. Visitors day was unbelievable..He couldn't tell us enough positive things …he adores his counselors , loves his activities, the canoe trip and the list goes on….
First time parent, Jill of sophomore Boy

Thank you so much for running such a spectacular operation! Ryan hasn't stopped talking about camp since he got home providing a detailed account of every activity and event . He has had an amazing time and kept saying what a great group of counselors he met.
First time Parent of sophomore boy

My favourite memory of the summer is Willy Wonka Candy day, the play and the talent show and our “councilors” and canoe trip
Freshkid girl Jamie

Our son was a little anxious about going to camp the first time as a senior camper but he came home to say he has made new fiends and had one of the best summers he has ever had, he loved it up there and he truly caught your fever, congratulations on your program and our heartfelt thanks to contributing to our son's personal growth.
Parent of first time senior boy

Sydney cant stop talking about all the wonderful experiences at Manitou ., about all of her new friends, the counselors and the staff. And from our point of you , you made us feel like it was camp for just one not 400 as you always mad us feel as if you were personally watching over her and keeping us informed…
Parent of first time senior girl from Buffalo

Home is a place where you can be yourself ….where you can try new things and reach new heights you never thought you could …it's a place where you can be your own person and follow your own path…it's a place where it's cool to be an individual…home is where I feel safe…my home is Camp Manitou
Amanda- junior girl

I have to say that I am really grateful for the care and enthusiasm of all of Aidan's counselors- he liked them all!
Julie- parent of sophomore girl

I am pretty sure I forgot to convey to you how happy we were with our childrens' first camp experience at Manitou. They both came home just that much more independent and confident and of course full of stories and cheers. We are confident that Manitou is the right “home away from home” for them and are very grateful for everything you did and are doing to create this wonderful experience.
Parent, Karen of Fresh and Soph campers

My son had another great summer at Manitou …One the best things we noticed was that he was taking initiative more than ever..he took his Bronze Med on his own without us asking him to. When we found the two of the you (directors) and what you offer at Manitou we found a place where children can become young adults and really look at life differently during their time with you. He not only learned to sail or build camp fires but rather he goes to Manitou to evolve into the person he will become.
Long time parent Rhonda of senior boy from Pensylvania

I can't tell you how thrilled I was to see Carson just beaming as he got off the bus yesterday – we are loving all the stories and I am sure we will continue to here more, boy you guys do a lot of things there
Parent of first time junior boy.

Thanks for giving Ben such a great experience..it exceeded his expectations which I had set pretty high.
Parent of sophomore boy

Jeff and Mark thanks for giving our kids a fantastic summer. This summer was a great growth experience for them. They are more self confident than when they left a month ago , We could not have asked for more from the camp experience and are delighted that all three are now real campers.
Parent Neil of soph and junior campers

I just wanted to tell you what an amazing time Brandon had at camp this summer. You have converted him to a two session camper. He loved his counselors and the boys in this cabin but I think the highlight was the canoe trip to Temagami.
Parent of senior boy.

I wanted to personally thank you with the deepest gratitude for the amazing experience my daughter had at your camp this summer. She had the best time in her whole life and couldn't stop talking about it, the delicious food, the fun and loving counselors, the benevolent community of all the campers and how inviting and sweet they all were with her.
Parent of first year camper Stephanie from Columbia

Both our kids had amazing experiences this past summer. Noah has become the canoe tripper extraordinaire, a passion he pursues- thank you for proving a fabulous environment for our kids in the summer. All the attention and personal touch you bring to their experience is much appreciated.
Long time parent of two kids

What an awesome summer my kids had- they loved it and can't wait to go back, when I asked my boys their favourite thing about camp they said “everything mommy, everything”. Of course the wakeboarding and special events get special mention and the kids have new play dates with friends they made at camp and we have met some new friends ourselves, special parents that we met at Manitou- I love hearing all the stories and memories and keep re- reading all of their letters
First time parent, Jen of two freshkids

Testimonials 2009

Thank you for welcoming our kids with open arms and making them feel like they have always been at camp- but mostly thank you for thinking of their well being before everything else. We're still in shock that you were right that staying for second month was even better than first! You guys should be incredibly proud of the way you run your camp and your philosophy and staff- I only wish we started with you. ….parents of junior girl My favorites memories are my cabin bonds, new experiences and discovery of new things about myself.
Senior girl

This was the best summer of my life- Thank you so much for making this camp tons of fun. I made so many new friends and new memories that I will forever cherish
Senior girl

Life deals us many different cards along the way- unfortunately we were dealt something that turned our life upside down but we were blessed to have Manitou as part of their life and to have the kindness and support for your children.
Mother of junior girls

I just wanted to thank you for being so welcoming to me at camp; as soon as I got off the bus- I really felt like I belonged right away-
Junior boy – first time

Our kids just got home and for two kids so nervous about their first overnight camp experience, they came back transformed..they both came back with amazing self confidence and independence just like you said . They talk about their new Manitou family and for this we are so grateful. They now understand for the first time what remarkable people they both are..these are lessons that could only be learned at camp. We also could never have found another camp which could be so much to two so very different kids. The fact that we can challenge our arts kid and our sports kids separately in one camp is truly amazing.
Mother of fresh and soph girl and boy

The experience that our daughter had at Camp Manitou is invaluable. A huge pat on the back to you and all of your colleagues- you all work so hard and are clearly passionate about making Camp Manitou so special.
Freshkid parent

Our kids just arrived home and the first thing they did is bang the table and say “Manitou meals can't be beat- thanks for the food n, now let's go eat”..for the rest of the day they sang the Manitou song and their tribal games song and then of course they required a bedtime story since they got one at camp every night! Thanks of much form making their first Manitou experience unforgettable.
Parent of freshkid girl and sophomore boy.

I have been meaning to write to you all summer about the impact Manitou has had on the girls over time. People often remark on our girls and no doubt we are fortunate but we tell parents when they ask that we attribute their positive values and outlook to Manitou as a significant part of their wonderful personalities have been shaped by camp. The loving atmosphere coupled with the freedom and independence to be who they are and make their own choices with adult guidance in a world where there is little opportunity has allowed them to become confident empathetic and socially aware girls.
Parents of two girls who grew up at Manitou . now on staff and CIT/

We just wanted to thank you for the energy and dedication you and your staff have in making everyone happy at your camp, she looked great, healthy and the cabin was spotless. The counselors spent plenty of time with us giving us a summary of her experiences, how she handles herself and the dynamics. I was really impressed with how in tune they were with her. The setting is spectacular and the property amazing. Her success is as a result of the sensitivity of your unique community and special people in it such as yourself.
Parent of sophomore girl

I always think your camp reached its peak and then it bumps up again – the acceptance factor at your camp and how the environment is so supportive, no matter if you can hold a tune, if you are a zig and you are in a cabin of zaggers you still fit in. There seems to be a strong culture of acceptance which starts with your clear intent to create an environment of inclusion. It's nice to know that kids can feel good about themselves even if they are not the best at something- the way the middle of the pack singers can belt it out in front of hundreds of supportive friends, for example.
Parent of senior girl and CIT boy

Our son has an absolutely wonderful time at camp. He expresses a real sense of cohesiveness when talking about his cabin which is a large part was due to his counselors.
Parent of junior boy

Dear Mark and Jeff- thank you so much for making my first summer at Manitou the best it could be. I made so many new friends and had the time of my life. You are best directors I know. The activities are great.
Junior girl.

Dear Mark and Jeff and All Manitou staff:
I just came home and had to write to thank you for the best time ever. My counselors did a fantastic job especially Chuckles who made me laugh so much. It was pretty cool having my brother there and getting hugs from him around my neck and I made some really nice new friends. Thanks so much for having such a great camp for kids to come to and enjoy.
Freshkid boy

Thanks so much for making my first Manitou camp experience the best ever at summer camp. I was really lucky to have such amazing counselors and unithead who helped me through my rough times but I have to give you a special thanks for always helping me to put a smile on my face and for having those special talks with me.
Junior girl

Thank you so much for running a camp that makes our children cry to leave- your staff are second to none and they are so much a part of the experience our children have. Thank you for building a camp that gives our children a life time of extraordinary experiences
Parent of soph and junior boys.

Right from the start you were so patient with all our questions and accommodating to all our requests- that I knew we picked the right camp. I also want you to know how impressed with the camp I was when I came up on visitors day, it is absolutely beautiful , the cabins are great and the range of activities you offer is terrific. Clearly Camp Manitou is a reflection if the people that run it.
Parents of fresh and soph boy

Over the past eight years that I've been at camp I have grown to close you and al the directors. The genuine caring that you show to myself and my brother is exactly what makes this camp unique from all the rest,. – I remember my first year and you doing a home visit and asking if the staff really care about the camps. After all these years I have come to call this place my home away from home – thank you for the best CIT summer

Thank yo so much for creating the best place ever- you have me the greatest memories of my life and you guys are so genuine about caring about us so much,. Manitou is known for its sportsmanship and respect because you did such a great job of stressing these aspects.

I don't know where to begin thanking you. Thank you for providing me with all the place and opportunity to grow , learn and feel so comfortable being myself.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am blessed to come to such a beautiful place every summer and it is at camp where I have made the best friends in the world and where my greatest memories are made. This is the place where I have grown up- camp has shaped me into who I am today and taught me so much about who I am and who I want to be.

Testimonials 2008

Dear Mark and Jeff,
Carly got off the plane yesterday and within 2 minutes was crying. Her tears were because she did not want to leave camp. I also got teary as that made me very happy. You guys do an amazing job and have created the idyllic world that I'm so glad she is a part of.
- parent of Senior Girl age 14, 2008

My first summer in 2000, I was really nervous to leave home for a month. I asked my older sister “What's going to happen when I cry, who will take care of me?” I remember she looked back at me with a little smirk on her face and replied “Don't' worry, before I went to camp I was scared too. But I promise the second you get off the bus at camp you will be fine. Because the second you walk off the bus you become a part of something new, something big. Something called the Manitou Family.” I didn't quite understand what she meant, but when the time came and I walked off the bus to Manitou, meeting my new cabinmates and counsellors I instantaneously realized what she meant. I knew right then that I was now a part of the Manitou family. Since then I have spent ever summer at Manitou.
- CIT age 16, 2008.

Manitou has changed us all for the better. If it weren't for Manitou, we would not be who we are today. Here we have learned how to treat other people, to be respectful, to care for everyone around us, how to treat the environment and how to be true to ourselves.
- 3 Senior Girls age 15, 2008.

My Camp Manitou experience began one cool summer's day 4 years ago. I was a small 11-year old who really wanted to experience “the best summer ever” at camp. Coming from Atlanta, I did not know anyone in my cabin and had no idea what to expect. Little did I know that Camp Manitou would become, over the course of 4 years, my summertime home where laughter was common and a sense of happiness could be felt.
The feeling I get when I return to camp every summer to greet my “camp friends” is indescribable. Part of what keeps me packing my duffels every June is the prospect of seeing friends that mean so much to me. Not just friends my age, but the staff as well. Having an incredible staff distinguishes Camp Manitou. A lot of work is put forth to having an amazing staffing team every summer and it truly shows. The staff at camp is like a corner puzzle piece; indispensible and required to complete the puzzle. Without the staff, summer at Camp Manitou would not be the same. The activities at camp and being able to create a schedule independently are some of the things that make Manitou unique. I would never have learned how to water-ski, how to do aerobics, how to serve a tennis ball, or how to canoe in the middle of a lake if it were not for the wide range of activities to choose from at Manitou. Everyone is bound to find something they have a passion for with so many new things to try.
- Senior Girl age 15, 2008.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for helping this summer be Sophie's best ever! The transformation from last summer to this summer was miraculous! I know a large part of the turn-a-round was due to the care, attention and sensitivity that you showed Sophie. She is already talking about next summer!
- Parent of Sophomore Girl age 11, 2008.

I wanted to let you know what a great camp you are running. My daughter absolutely loved it. She left home in June a pretty stressed out and unhappy girl, and she came back a completely changed person. She was so happy and joyful, confident, loving life and just crazy about all the friends she made. Also, she became very attached to her counsellors. It is wonderful to see her bond with the staff that acted as role models for her. I can't thank you enough for what a positive effect Camp Manitou has had on my daughter.
- Parent of Senior Girl age 14, 2008.

Dear Mark and Jeff,
We thank you once again for your incredible thoughtfulness and attention to every detail in all that you do but mostly, for the love and passion you impart at camp, and all year long.
- Parents of 3 campers age 11, 11, 16.

Dear Mark and Jeff,
I would like to thank you so much for Rebecca's wonderful summer. Once again, she came home reporting that she had the best summer ever. Since she's been home she has been talking non-stop about her many activities. She was blown away by World Games and said they were the most intense three days of her life. Manitou continues to be Rebecca's favourite place in the world. Thanks again for providing a fun, caring and nurturing summer experience.
- Parent of 15 year old Senior Girl, 2008.

Mark and Jeff,
You have done such a great job instilling proper values into each camper and molding them into young adults. You guys run a fine camp and I am so thankful to have been able to come for so long.
- CIT age 16, 2008.

Thank you very much! Eugenio is really enthusiastic of the experience, and we are also very happy not only for the English, but also for the human experience, that is very important for everybody but especially for Eugenio. He is always telling us that the kids and staff at camp were really fantastic and the place was beautiful!

Testimonials 2007

Dear Mark and Jeff,
I have been meaning to email you both for some time. James absolutely loved Camp Manitou! He is a boy of very few words, but he had a lot to say about camp. He spoke very highly about 'Chuckles' and the great times that they had together. Making the video with Sam, Enrique and Chuckles was one of is highlights of the summer. Winning the World Games was a close second! We are so happy that we are able to offer him the opportunity to experience life at Camp Manitou. From the first time I read your website I could tell that you really care about your campers. I appreciate the updates and phone calls especially the message I received with the words of praise about James. As a parent, there is nothing more rewarding then hearing that another adult feels that your child is easy going, flexible and a phenomenal person. Thank you for that and for taking such good care of my son. Next year James' brother Cooper will be joining James at camp. Cooper has heard all the fun stories from James and can't wait to experience it for himself. Although I miss my boys each summer I know that they are in great hands and that nothing will compare to the amazing experience they will have for a month each summer.
Have a great winter, see you soon. Jane
- Parent of Freshkid boy, age 8, 2007.

Dear Mark and Jeff,
Thank you for an amazing summer. This was the best summer of my life. The main reason why this was the best summer of my is the staff plus the campers. Thanks for the best summer of my life.
- Sophomore camper age 9, 2007.

Going to camp here is really important to me because it's a place where you can be completely independent and make decisions for yourself. All year long, your parents may nag you about cleaning up your room, eating your fruits and vegetables, or studying for that history test you have coming up, but Camp is a time when you can make your own choices. You get to choose your own schedule and which activities you take or don't take. It's such a privilege to be able to do that considering so many campers at other camps don't get to choose their schedules. At Camp Manitou, you have the option of taking many activities that you may not be able to do back home such as sailing, lacrosse, theatre, all types of dance, 3d art, pottery, or beach volleyball and too many others to name.
- Senior girl camper, age 15, 2007

Dear Guys,
Just as good wine gets better with age, such has been the case with Carly and camp. The older she gets, the greater is her enthusiasm and love for Manitou. From the moment we left the airport for home, she talked incessantly for four straight hours, with hardly a breath, until she collapsed on the sofa.falling fast asleep. She said she had the best time, loved her cabin and counselors, grew closer with old friends, made new ones, bonded with all of her cabin mates, tried new activities, skied over the wake - just to name a few. She may as well have been in a 5 star hotel, i.e. The Palace. Thank you for giving her a place to feel really good about herself, away from the stressors of school, parents, etc. Camp was always that kind of great place for me, and I'm thrilled that she has found her own world to experience all that a great camp has to offer. Thank you for everything. Let me know if you are heading our way during the year. Keep in touch.
- Parent of Junior Girl, age 12, 2007

The first time I came to Manitou was with none of my school friends. I didn 't know what to expect about the kids my age and the kids in my cabin. But as soon as I discovered the spirit of Manitou I knew this would be a great summer and many more to come. Thank you (Bravo)
- Senior boy camper, age 14, 2007

Dear Mark and Jeff,
Sorry that it has taken me so long to write this letter I wanted to do it when the kids got home!! It has been so crazy. I just wanted to thank you guys and all the staff at camp for helping me kids have the best time. Meryl got off the bus and said she loved everything camp. She understood that getting homesick was natural but your staff did such a wonderful job to make her stay and want come back next year. Her candle and dance award made her feel so special. Albert got off the bus and asked if he could just bet back on the bus and spend another month at camp. He said please, please, please!!!! I want you to know that Albert has never wanted a sleep over at anyone's house. He too can not wait to go back next year. Thanks again for all your hard work it was much appreciated.
- Parent of Freshkid boy age 8 & Sophomore girl 11, 2007.

You know you're in the right place when Manitou starts to feel more like home than home does. I think I speak for everyone when I say that I counted the days until camp starting in September. I had a super stressful and busy year and the light at the end of the tunnel for me was the fact that soon, I would be at camp. So why do we love camp so much, cause it's the best.
- Junior girl camper, age 13, 2007

We learned from the Mosquito and our kids that you folks remember to continue to instill great values in the campers via community week etc. We really appreciate them being reminded of how privileged they are and that reaching out to others less fortunate is a wonderful way to be and they did it while having fun at the same time. Thank you once again for showing our kids and 500 others a great time. We continue to feel very confident with you both at the helm of Camp Manitou! UR DA BEST!! All the best wishes

Dear Mark and Jeff:

We can’t tell you how impressed we are with the way you run your camp. Your staff is superb, your thoroughness about disseminating information about each camper to the staff, your creative programming and personal involvement all together made us feel really comfortable about our son being under your care. You really made true on your word in all areas. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for taking such good care of him.. He had a memorable first summer at camp and can’t wait to return next year.
Parents Judy and David, Florida; USA of Freshkid camper boy.

Looking back , after a few days of my first camp experience, when I started at Manitou 8 years ago….., the amazing camp environment got a hold of me and helped me break out of my shell. Camp Manitou provided me with a safe, warm and caring atmosphere that helped me make many friends and lasting memories within those first few days…Manitou is where my best memories were formed. I learnt reponsiblity, independence, respect, acceptance, love and so much more. I have developed friendships that I know will last a lifetime. The people at Manitou , whether it's a camper or staff member always seem to put a smile on my face and warm my heart. I'm comfortable being myself and I don't have to try or worry that people won't accept me. Thank you for giving me the best years of my life….
Senior Girl 2006 Malerie

Camp has made such a great impression in my life. Manitou has always been a place that I feel most comfortable and is like a second home. Everything about Manitou is amazing and the people I have met have become some of the most important people in my life. From having staff that I looked up to and admired to best friends that I talk to and depend on daily. I just wanted to let you know how I really appreciated how kind and friendly you two have always been to me and to my brother and sister.
Senior camper 2006

The thing about Manitou is that it is not a place that makes me a better person during the months of being there, but it is a place that continues to influence me all year around as Manitou is a lifestyle. I know that if I ever got the chance to influence someone's life the way Manitou has done to me then I would be known as a hero.
Cit girl

Thanks so much. Both of my kids constantly see their Manitou friends, I think that is great as they have formed such good friendships that continue into the school year…my other friend's kids from other camps do not seem to get together like our kids do …my kids were telling me at Manitou the kids take all the activities seriously and actually get into it and that there really is such a strong team sprit. I am told that World Games is one of the most exciting times and both my kids say it makes all the difference when campers actually want to participate and be involved rather than just chilling.
Parent 2006 of soph boy and CIT girl

I don't know if I ever had the chance to tell you that my daughter's experience at camp this summer has changed her life greatly and our entire family's. I was very worried about the change but as it turned out my daughter came home a completely different person for the better, she has matured this summer and she has become more confident nicer human being- basically she should have changed years ago …your camp has a really nice group of kids all around and by the way I had the best and most relaxing visitors day ever and great food by the way…you run a beautiful camp and keep it up.”
Parent of senior girl 2006

Just a note to thank you for running such a fabulous and successful camp session again this year. The camp stories are flowing. Our daughter enjoyed her camping responsibilities…the camaraderie in her cabin was tremendous…Our freshkids loved every minute of camp and couldn't wait to show us the freshkids scrapbook…special thanks to the freshkids unithead for being sensitive to our needs…all three kids raved about their counselors…we also admire the individual attention to children with special requirements as this sets you light years apart form other camps…”
Parent of freshkid boy and girl and senior girl

Thanks for returning her safe and happy. She had an amazing time and informed me within five minutes of getting off the bus, that next year she is going for two months. She also said that you and mark and all the staff were amazing….you and mark run a great show and we were so impressed by your amazing facility and great team and the excellent lunch on visitors day.
Parent of soph girl –

Thank you for the attention given to our son. I was very impressed with the camp and the counselors in particular. It was apparent to me that he had been well cared for…You should know that Jay was absolutely terrific as were the guitar instructors …you have an awesome staff….congratulations on running such a fine camp and the staff you attract. It says a lot about you and the reputation and high standard you demand and uphold. I was very very impressed.

My summer was phenomenal, world games was amazing, my cabin is great, what more could I ask for.
Soph girl

Thanks for such an outstanding summer. This was by far the greatest summer of my life and its all because of Manitou and the amazing friends I have made there. I have never had such a close cabin and I even speak to my counselors almost every single day in the city. They were so amazing and brought SOOO much to our cabin.
Senior girl

I really liked world games because of the games and it was really funny when it was Disney day and all the freshkids got the little things that you blow and I blew it and it went in my counselors mouth -
First year freshid girl

This was my first year at Manitou and not knowing anybody, the people and staff were so nice and amazing,

Senior Girl

Conquering my fears of heights an singing in front of people is what makes camp so great for me this summer.
Senior girl

My best memories are the moments that I had with my cabin, at mealtime, or at world games. I am so happy I got to meet so many new people and that the friendships that I made are so different than any other., In such a short amount of time I became so close to so many people,. Manitou gave me the opportunity to learn a lot about myself as well as lot about different activities.

Testimonials 2005

I wanted you to know that your camp is amazing and a thousand times better than any camp could ever be. You make a great effort to make everybody feel at home.
12 year old camper - 2005

You run a great camp and we were thrilled with the fact that you not only provide the children with a great facility and lots of activities, but with values that are very important to us. You have taught many of your campers the importance of being a part of the Manitou family.
Parent of two campers 10 years old & 13 years old – 2005

She came home with an inner calm and a bit more mature, and very proud of her guitar accomplishments. By the way Allison, adored her counselors, she said they were the big sisters she's always wanted.
Parent of a 14 year old girl - 2005

Just a quick note to thank you for providing Madeline with a fantastic environment at camp this summer, in which she formed deep meaningful relationships with both staff and campers. You run a great show…in which great kids thrive. Many thanks!
Parent of a 14 year old girl – 2005

I want to, yet again, thank you and your family for the most amazing summer of my life. Everything I experienced working with the kids and the staff has changed me and how I will continue through life, forever! You have made Camp Manitou an amazing success. You and your team are changing lives!!!
1st year staff member 21 years old – 2005

Your honesty and involvement in what goes on in the social lives of these kids is just one of the many reasons we so love Manitou. I can't even express how impressed we always are with you and the camp.
Parent of a 14 year old boy – 2005

What an amazing, spectacular and special place Manitou continues to be. It's heaven on a lake near what a New Yorker considers in the middle of Canada. There can't possible be another camp anywhere that gives campers the complete package personal and emotional caring topped with outstanding, professional and most importantly fun activities.
Parent of a 13 year old girl – 2005

I just wanted to express my thanks not only for your message but also for taking such an interest in your campers (and staff) and the wonderful activities you've planned for all of them.
Parent of an 8 year boy – 2005

When I first got to camp I was very homesick all of the time. But my cabin mates helped me latter. I was so happy that when I left it felt like I was leaving home.
11 year old camper – 2005

Hi my name is Daniel. Camp is a home away from home. Everyone makes lots of friends. I love Manitou because everyone is so nice.
8 year old camper – 2005

4 years ago, as I was 14, my parents decided to send me to this camp. A French boy, going in a non-speaking country…terrifying for me. But I did it. I went to camp and after the first session, I realized that a lot of things happened and I couldn't feel them. In my case, it was a place to make a lot of friends. It was a place to share with them. It was a place I had fun with them. There is no other place like this one. I sincerely believe that camp is an important step in being a man.
Camper/Staff member – 2005

What camp is to me, is a escape from reality. In life we have hang ups and downs, but to me, it feels like in this one certain spot, in the heart of Ontario, I can let everything go. I have never been to another place that has had an effect like this on me, other than your camp. Camp Manitou isn't a summer camp any more, it grew on me, its home.
CIT Girl - 2005

It's the most amazing feeling knowing that I made such an impact on these young girl's lives and that I really made their summers.
3rd year staff member – 2005

I would firstly like to express my gratitude to your self, Mark and Jeff for providing me with this unforgettable experience, which was Camp Manitou 2005. The kids, activities, facilities and overall entire programming for the summer were first class. I would have to honestly say that wherever I go, it is the people who make the experience and this certainly goes for the campers and staff from Manitou.
1st year staff member – 2005

We all loved visitor's day. The camp is beautiful and Rich had to tear me away from a resting spot by the picturesque lake. The highlight of Carly's month was her canoe trip, which thrilled me because she was hesitant to go on another one.
Parent of a 12 year old first time camper – 2005

We are so thrilled at how successful Allie was. She loves camp and everything about it. We are still listening to stories. It's great to hear how independent she was and how she valued the whole experience of it.
Parents of a first time camper – 2005

The kids have attended many camps and several schools…they could all take a lesson from you! I am impressed that not only do you keep records pertaining to each camper but also that you are so openly willing to share this information. As a parent I always feels that you not only listen to what I say but also to what the children have to say. He really matured this summer (not that I ever really found him immature). I have never seen him as happy as he is. I believe that this is due to finally finding the right camp and the right school for him.
Parent of a 10 year old camper – 2005

Manitou is a personality friendly place. It is a place where people can be who they want to be, and are accepted for that.
15 year old camper – 2005

Here is what our campers & parents
of 2004 had to say about their summer:

The 2 months that I am at camp are the best two months of the year for me and for the other 10 months I am thinking about camp, talking about camp memories with camp friends and to my two great counselors and counting down the days until the busses leave for another great summer. Camp has given me the opportunity to meetin people around all round the world and now I am friends with people from florida, Georgia, Geneva and France. Camp has given me the countless opportunities for me to improve many skills even at things I never thought I would be good at. I have been on an amzing five day canoe trip to Kilarney that I will NEVER forget and been on several sail trips. The bonds that everyone has at camp is like nothing else I have experienced…..I have never seen so many people (myself included) crying as I did when the busses were about to leave…..as my good friend says "When you can make a grown man cry you know you've done something right…." When people ask me if I would like to go on a west coast connection trip I tell them Europe will always be there, camp won't. I hope to be part of the Manitou family for many more years to come."
Kyle CIT

The most rewarding part of my long journey (from California for visiting day) was to see the smile on my daughter's face when I arrived knowing she was literally having the time of her life with you in your wonderful facility…congratulations on what you do and the way you do it….
(parent Ron of 15 year old girl)

Visiting day was amazing, the camp is everything and more I thought it would be…the best part was sitting at the swim docks and talking to parents who like me wanted the same things from camp for their child….words can not express my gratitude….
parent Janet, of 10 year old girl from Atlanta

We would like to thank you for the amazing summers you gave our children, each came home raving about their experiences and boasted of new friends they had made…there is no doubt they will both be back for 2005
– parent mickey of 9 year old and 12 year old.

I do not know how you do it. Every year you seem to up the stroke and make Manitou a more and more incredible summer experience…Everything Rebecca describes about the summer was amazing. She is upset she didn't find Manitou when she was younger and curses the wasted years at that other camp…..My husband and I are discussing having another kid just so we can continue sending a camper to Manitou….
Parent Debbie of 16 year old girl

Thank you very much for the wonderful summer at camp. It would not be the same if you were not the director. I had the best time at camp
…camper Jeremy- age 12.

I can't begin to start on all the memories from the past four years- it seems like yesterday I was on the bus up here four years ago..I have matured so much since then I am so different its hard to believe I was the quiet little girl on the bus and now a very spirited world games winning camper captain-….I love manitou and all the friends I have made here more than anything they could ever know….
Carolyn- age 15

Here is what our campers
of 2003 had to say about their summer:

I love camp. It is not a matter of Manitou being my second home, it's a matter of it being my first. The feeling that I get there is indescribable. The friends and people you meet there are like no where else in the world. The spirit that comes with camp is spirit you only get to experience every so often. Everything at camp is special to me......Senior girl camper

This year was a fantasy. I must addmit that the summer of 2002 I was extremely homesick. But, this year I decided to give it a second chance. And from now on, I love taking second chances. I LOVE CAMP MANITOU!! It's all I ever talk about. And the friendships that I made, well not friendships but family members that I met I never forget. I have never felt more at home with people I love waking up every morning to a beautiful lake, with the sun rising. I will never forget the road that lead me to my best friendships I will ever find... At manitou you're a family and you do things together....... as one!
I LOVE MANITOU!!!!

A letter from a CIT to her CIT director:
I will never forget how you made the effort to try to get to know us all that first night….the next day you bonded with the kids at the beach, learning our names and telling us your stories about your trips…..Throughout first session you came to our cabins every morning, bustling with enthusiasm. Needless to say your vivacious nature motivated us to actually do things this summer. Even when people acted up your maintained your cool and you always treated us like adults ….you never judged but rather advised….you listened to our rants and gave us unconditional support… I thank you for being there and understanding us as acting like post pubescent teenagers…..this summer has been the most incredible summer of my life. You gave me the opportunity to develop as an adult while living as a kid….This summer has been a bubble of a time suspended in air…..I just wanted to let you know the impact you've had on me and the rest of the group during our time together. You taught us the difference of being the best and doing our best….you have instilled in us core values that will ultimately shape and mold our characters and thus our paths throughout life.

A letter from a parent of a sophomore Boy after the first week of camp:
I haven't met Ben yet but he has already won my heart….In the first letter I received from my son he told me he felt homesick. My son said that one day at dinner we was feeling sad and he did not think anyone saw his tears. Ben noticed, Ben asked him to go outside together…They sat and talked. My son tells me in his letter that Ben made him feel like it was Ok to miss his parents. He then felt better and described his counsellor as warm and kind … Please let Ben know how grateful I am for his caring and kindness. I knew from reading Sam's letter that both my children are truly in a warm and caring environment surrounded by wonderful people.

Letter from a parent of a senior girl:
The only way I can describe my daughter on visitors day was "blissful". I have never seen her so relaxed, happy and confident. She is under the Manitou spell and I think it is approaching Nirvana. You've truly created an atmosphere where these kids thrive and they seem to feed off one another. She has best friends for life in her cabin yet no one else in the cabin does the same activities as she does. Which means she spends the day doing what the loves and having her best friends too…..Last summer's experience was so good that I was afraid this summer would be a let down….Au Contraire- the momentum has built and you have outdone yourselves again in putting together a program and environment where my teenage daughter is thriving. Although I miss her, I do wish you could extend camp to December!

A letter from a parent of a sophomore boy:
( after coming home two days late because of the blackout and thus stayed at the director's home):
As we finally have our son, I am overwhelmed with emotion and gratitude to you both, your wonderful staff and lovely families. The tone, the warmth , the caring, which ensued…just reconfirmed my love of Manitou and the decision we made to send him in the first place. I can not thank you enough, you opened your homes and hearts welcoming these children in and never for one second did it feel as though it was a burden, in fact just the apposite, you somehow made the children feel as though it was a privilege for you to have them these extra days. You are really remarkable people who set and live up to a standard which I can only hope I also achieve.. He had another incredible summer…I thank you for all you give him, teach him and the philosophy which Manitou so truly represents and lives up to….And I hope he will take these qualities from Manitou and incorporate them into himself……

Letter from a parent of a Freshkid girl:
It was upon receiving our daughter's first postcard this year that I felt compelled to write to you. Her note read: "Dear family, I got a top bunk. I have seven girls not including me…Bye"….Music to my ears. It was evident from her too short a note home that she is simply thrilled to be back and focusing on the most simple and innocent of childhood pleasures, the assignment of a top bunk. As nervous as I was to send my seven year old daughter I know that the camaraderie she will experience with those seven girls , not to mention your terrific staff and administration will ensure this year's camp experience will surpass her freshman year.

Post camp: from the same camper: This was by far the best summer ever. Thanks Mark and Jeff for making it so special.

Letter from a first time, first year junior girl:
I went to Manitou for the first time and it was my first night at overnight camp. As soon as I stepped off the bus every one in my cabin was saying hello to me and telling me who they were and where they were from. I didn't know anybody and still they made me feel as if I was at home. A girl took me to the cabin right away to make sure I got my shelving and then we started our activities within the next day or so and they were really fun and the activity heads were so nice as were all the people. I have decided that next year I want to go to camp the whole summer because one month just is not enough. When I look back at camp this year what I remember the most is all the people and friends and participating in things I had never done before. Like World Games, and I even still wear that Sweden shirt. I'd just like to say thank you very much for making this the best summer of my life

Letters from the CIT's:

Indescribable, a word that perfectly describes this summer. The tears say it all. Thank you for everything.

The CIT year is definitely the most memorable at camp. The way the unit bonded really surprised me, This summer I 've made many lifelong friends.

Mark and Jeff, you have no idea how much I appreciate your hard work. It obviously pays off since this is the best camp ever. Thank you for an awesome awesome summer.

Dear Mark and Jeff, there are not enough words to describe how much fun I had at camp. I made new friends and got closer with old ones. I hope I can come back next year and have another amazing summer.

Mark and Jeff, I can't even explain how amazing this summer was and when I go back home I will go into severe depression. This summer was perfect, five stars, and nothing , not one thing could make this summer better, I hope to see you next year.

From Junior and Senior Girls:

Thanks to my counsellors for making me feel like I belong here

Thanks to the first month, and second month friends and counsellors for making my summer one of my best ever! Thanks to Mark and Jeff for making Manitou what it is. Lastly, thanks to Richard for making world games, my favourite part of camp.

Here is what our campers
of 2002 had to say about their summer:

Aug 16.02

Dear Mark and Jeff:

It hasn't even been 48 hours since I left camp and already I am missing it like crazy. The summer of 2002 was the best summer of my life. The friendships that I made and the experiences I had will be remembered forever.

Before camp started, I was a little unsure of what the CIT program would be about. I was worried about all the responsibilities, if or if not my campers would like me, and if I would get along with the staff. But from the minute I stepped off the bus, all my worries were pushed aside. The few days at Algonquin gave us all a chance to get to know each other and catch up with friends from previous years. It also taught us how to deal with situations that may arise and how to deal with campers. During that time I was told that we would form bonds with our campers that would last a lifetime. To me, that seemed strange. As a camper at another camp, their CIT program changes CIT's each week. They would come and go and would not be remembered after their week was up. Marissa's word's echoed in my head on changeover when as the buses pulled away, I had this urge to cry, as if the campers leaving were my children. I missed and still do each and every one of them. This showed me how much I loved being a CIT, because I could become so close with my camper cabin as well as my own cabin.

This letter to thank you for giving me the best summer ever. The CIT program was everything I had hoped it would be,. In my opinion it is the best program offered because it is a perfect balance of being a camper and a staff member. We are given a lot of responsibility with planning camp wide programs which are so much fun, we get a chance to truly get to know our camper placement cabins and their counsellors, we are given the opportunity to share our knowledge during our activity placement, we are treated with respect by being able to participate in staff activities, like staff snack and phone use, but when it boils down to it we are still campers and are given the luxury of choosing 3 out of 5 activities per day. I had the chance to try and participate in activities that I absolutely loved, like Tennis and Tae Kwon Doe, that I now hope to continue with in the city,

Thank you Mark and Jeff for everything you have done in Making Manitou the place it is, my home away from home. I love Manitou and I hope to be back next year.
CIT 2002

CAMPER AND PARENT UNSOLICITIED COMMENTS 2002

I am writing to say thank you for one of the best summers I have ever had and for giving me the opportunities to find myself through a diverse amount of activities….I have grown as a person at camp and… would like to thank you for being there through it all…. - CIT

The summer of 2002 was the best summer of my life. The friendships I made and the experiences I had will be remembered forever. When the buses pulled away I had this urge to cry as if the campers I took care of were my own children. This showed how much I loved being a CIT because I could become so close with my camper cabin as well as my own cabin. This letter is to thank you for giving me the best summer ever. - CIT

The care and concern that you extended on my son's behalf was far beyond that of any camp director. Your sensitivity and understanding of him even exceeds the boundaries of friendship. We are so fortunate to have him at Manitou. He truly had an amazing time. - Parent of Sophomore camper

For previous four summer our daughter was at a camp in Massachusetts and she had a decent time, loved the activities but not the kids. This summer she loves the activities and adores the kids as well. Being that teenage girls are pretty much the same worldwide I would like to think it is because Manitou attracted a better nicer crop of kids, but I think it is more then that…your staff must foster an environment that bring out the good in these typical girls. - Parent of senior girl

Wow, are you guys great!! The two of you truly know how to run a wonderful camp. Words can not thank you enough for making camp such a fantastic and positive experience for our kids. The acre and love that you showed to _____, was well beyond anyone's expectations. She left on the bus both nervous and excited and the moment your staff greeted her we know camp was going to be a wonderful experience for her. It only got better from there thanks to Holly, Sandy, Katie, Natalie, her great unit head , and all the Manitou staff. The friendships and experiences our girls have had will continue to gain over the years and will last a life time. - Parent of sophomore and junior campers.

How luck it was that our daughter experienced her first time away from us at Manitou. I am just writing to say thank you. We do appreciate all that you did and consider ourselves luck to have our daughter at Manitou.

Hi Mark , I already miss camp. I wanted to thank you for a great summer at Manitou. I had a great time. P.S. I am coming back in 2003 - Freshkid letter

I have never experienced so much spirit in my life; it was incredible.
First year camper at age 14/2001

Well, she stepped off the bus and had stars in her eyes, she was filled with vitality and even cried because she missed camp. She may not have been your easiest camper but your staff did a wonderful and thoroughly patient job working with her. She came back with a new face of confidence and self-identity…

My son's first words off the bus were " I am going back next year". He had an amazing experience, made many friends (the phone is already ringing) and he is bustling with camp stories. Thanks for all you have done.
Parent of Camper age 12

We wanted to fax you a note to thank you for a terrific two weeks our son had and he can't wait to come back next year. He hasn't stopped talking about all of his adventures including being in the play "You are a good man Charlie Brown", playing Clue for evening program, learning to water-ski, going to a water ski show, performing in the talent show, watching a movie in Mark's cabin during the heat wave, Midnight Madness, learning new card games. etc. We wish we were nine years old so we could join in on all of the fun.
Parent of Camper age 9/2001

Our daughter had the best summer ever. She loved the kids, the counselllors and loved you. You do a fabulous job and I wanted to thank you.

This is a letter of thanks and appreciation. When we saw our son, his self confidence shone through without any trace of anxiety. It was obvious that you and your staff helped him work through the pain of self doubt with the active support of those who care. Thanks for taking a special interest in our son and now as a result his self esteem has grown, as if he has scaled a mountain he thought he could never climb. To me that is what camp is all about.

Thanks for letting me have another great summer. It's been the best in seven years!

I have never had a job like this before, where the bosses actually care about their employees so much as to sit outside and talk to them for an hour and a half even if they have a busy day. I found it just great working at Manitou mostly due to the job you do and all of the staff ( and your wonderful how to flush a toilet demo was one of the high lights of the summer). I think the fact that you care so much about each other and the camp, really rubs off to not only the campers but the staff as well.

My greatest memory of camp this year was going on a canoe trip with my girls and getting knee deep in mud and having a mud fight. I have too many awesome memories to write down. I made so many wonderful friends this summer.

Once again it was a summer to remember. You guys are special people who enhance the lives of so many each summer. Thanks for all of your support, fun and memories.
