F.A.Q.s
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS BY NEW C.I.T.s
Am I working like a staff member or am I still a camper?
As a C.I.T. you are considered a camper. Though you won't have a counsellor living with you, you will still be closely supervised by camp staff and will participate in all camp programs. You will also have a significant amount of responsibility to prepare you for what it is like to work as a counsellor. You will be expected to assist the staff in your placements and activity periods throughout each day. Of course along with added responsibility come some extra privileges as well, including using the C.I.T. lounge for nighttime snack, use of telephones, special C.I.T. activities, and of course our C.I.T. discounted fee.
Do I still get to pick my schedule?
Yes, though it is a little bit more structured. You will be asked to choose at least one double major where you can develop specific program skills and learn to teach them. Also, you will have regular C.I.T. meetings where the C.I.T. coordinator will work with you on various leadership topics.
What do we do at C.I.T. meetings?
Usually every other day you will meet as a group with your C.I.T. coordinator. You may spend the period working through a leadership topic, doing exercises, playing games or discussing issues in placements. You will also have the opportunity to work on all camp and unit programming to put your team and leadership skills to work.
Do I have to choose a specialty?
Usually we encourage each C.I.T. to choose at least one activity they want to develop skills in so that they are proficient enough to teach there if they return on staff. However, sometimes a C.I.T. might not have an activity that they really want to focus on, but could make an excellent General Counsellor. We would then have you work with a G.C. for 2 periods and become a "G.C.-C.I.T."
How do evaluations work?
Four times over the summer, counsellors and specialists you are working with will give you and your C.I.T. coordinator feedback on how you are doing. At the end of the summer, you will be sent a final evaluation including your C.I.T. coordinator's observations. If you have done a good job, that evaluation makes an excellent letter of reference.
Can I still be a regular camper?
Sometimes, campers eligible for the C.I.T. program may wish to return as Senior Campers. In some cases we can arrange to keep campers with a younger group if they choose. It is not possible however for C.I.T. aged campers to join the C.I.T. group without participating in the C.I.T. program.
Can I be a C.I.T. for only 3 or 4 weeks?
No. There is just too much going on in the program to pack enough into 3 or 4 weeks. Also, it is very difficult to evaluate C.I.T.s fairly over such a short period. We ask that all C.I.T.s make the commitment to the program for the full 7 weeks.
Can I come back as staff if I don't do the C.I.T. program?
Sometimes, yes. Each year, we give first application opportunities to returning staff and then to people that successfully completed the C.I.T. program the previous year. If there are still open Junior Counsellor positions, we may look to fill them by interviewing former campers or new.
